Peanut allergy and oral immunotherapy in infants
Presentation
Peanut allergy is common in children, and management has traditionally relied on strict dietary avoidance. In recent years, peanut oral immunotherapy (POIT) has emerged as a successful treatment option. POIT aims to raise the threshold of tolerance to peanut, thereby reducing the risk and severity of reactions following accidental exposure. Treatment involves gradual dose escalation to a maintenance level, which must be continued alongside a strict avoidance diet. Literature suggests that POIT is well tolerated in younger children in terms of safety and efficacy with the possibility of being able to eat peanut more freely in certain individuals.
