The aim of this presentation is to empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge and guidance needed for accurately assessing whether a baby has Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) and recognizing when it's time to signpost to a specialist dietitian. By detailing the prevalence, diagnostic criteria, and distinguishing between IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated reactions, the presentation aims to reduce misdiagnosis and its associated risks.
I will support primary care professionals to make timely, informed decisions on whether specialist intervention is needed. By ensuring that patients are properly diagnosed and referred correctly, we can optimise treatment outcomes and alleviate the burdens of this condition on both healthcare systems and families.
Keeping our children & young people safe with asthma
10:20 - 11:00
This presentation explores how we can keep our children & families with asthma safe and well.
It will explore what asthma is, how we can teach the fundamental themes, and how to foster good understanding.
When families understand asthma, their children are much less likely to have an attack.
This session will introduce some basic narratives to help explain the pathophysiology and therapy for asthma, help troubleshoot age-related education and also do some mythbusting!
Advising on dining out with allergies, intolerances and Coeliac Disease
11:30 - 12:10
Dining out with as a Food Hypersensitive (FHS) Customer can be a nightmare, understanding the pitfalls and knowing the right questions to ask at all stages of their customer journey from looking for a place to book, to arriving on the day, taking orders and what happens when it can go wrong!
Who should they report an issue too, and how to have conversations with the organisation to encourage change and training in their business
Caroline will talk about the advice and guidance you can offer and what sites to check out to help with resources when managing catering in all environments including educational setting, hospital visits and dining out
I currently work as Head of Clinical Services for Allergy UK, helping to raise awareness of Allergy both nationally and internationally, supporting the aims of the charity and helping people affected by Allergy where possible. Previously working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in IMMUNOLOGY & ALLERGY for a London NHS Trust. I Trained at University College, London, in 1979 after studying the 3 sciences at A level. Pediatric training was gained at Great Ormond Street Hospital Public Health & Specialist Practice in School Nursing qualification was gained in 1994 whilst working for a London community NHS Trust. Going into schools and conducting health assessments on children made me very aware of the rising incidence of Allergy and often it’s poor management.
I wanted to make a difference to this aspect of Nursing, so went into the field of Immunology & Allergy to gain knowledge, experience and the opportunity to contribute to research projects that have now had a big impact on Allergy, joining many groups that have changed policy and guidelines within the UK and Internationally.
I joined the Royal College of Nursing Immunology & Allergy Nurses group as well as the British Society of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (BSACI), becoming the first Nurse to sit on the BSACI council and starting the National Nurses in Allergy Group, which went on to include dietitians and psychologist's etc and is now an Allied Health category within the BSACI.
