When does infantile dry skin become atopic eczema?
09:35 - 10:15
Dry skin, including cradle cap is common in infants - but when does dry skin become atopic eczema? Atopic eczema affects 20% of children, with 60% developing eczema in infancy. This session will look at diagnostic markers for atopic eczema and give an update on the current evidence-base management of infantile atopic eczema. Firstly, the complexity of atopic eczema will be explored, genetics, immunology, and links to allergy. Atopic eczema management will look at the ABC: Avoiding irritants, looking at common triggers (irritants and allergens). Bland emollients, looking at the importance of complete emollient therapy (washing and moisturising) for skin barrier repair. Controlling inflammation, looking at topical treatments (topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors) and appropriate use of antimicrobials. Finally, red flags and guidance on when to refer to secondary care dermatology/allergy services will be discussed.

1001 days, Eggs and Infant Allergy: An Update of Evidence
11:20 - 12:00
Food allergies can affect 3–8% of children and 1–3% of adults. Previous advice was to delay the introduction of potentially allergenic foods (including eggs) during weaning. However, this has been found to be counterproductive, and it is the current view that potentially allergenic foods should be introduced when weaning commences at around 6 months. Evidence now shows that consuming eggs in pregnancy and early in weaning can help protect against allergy; and eggs with the British Lion stamp on their shell are a now regarded by the NHS as safe to eat runny or even raw in pregnancy and infancy.
Our microbiome has the potential to directly and indirectly interact with our immune system, with known links to a later risk of allergy. In this talk Dr Childs will describe how the trajectory of our microbiome is established in early life, the potential interventions we can use to modify our microbiome, and the evidence related to allergy and tolerance.
